About Periodontal Treatment

A periodontist is a dentist with expertise in implant placement as well as the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums and bone that supports the teeth. In addition to receiving substantial training in both of these fields, periodontists also undergo three years of extra schooling after graduating from dental school.

Even though some general dentists handle less severe cases of periodontal disease, many of them will send their patients to periodontists for more difficult situations. In a similar vein, although some general dentists conduct dental implant treatments, many also refer their patients—particularly for the more difficult implant cases—to periodontists.

In addition to handling challenging periodontal and implant cases, periodontists also provide a variety of other specialized services.
